The cruel sun’s gaze burned with blistering heat. Although the weather had been warm for some time, this was new, brutal, and I knew that if I continued to press onwards, the troops would surely collapse from heat exhaustion. As such, I chose to stop the march and set up camp. Taking with them extra rations of water, my scouts searched far and wide for some stream or lake where they might replenish the army’s supplies of water.
