Cold air swept down unexpectedly from the north, bringing with it storm and snow, catching us in the open with little protection against the freezing temperatures. As the bitter cold began to freeze their flesh and numb our bones, I made a tough decision. Calling a halt to the march, I grouped the troops together, seeking to create a makeshift shelter of our circled baggage train. Scouts were sent out in search of firewood, and none were allowed to sleep, for risk of succumbing to the cold.
