Our army had been proceeding along a trail, narrow, but still a welcome relief from forging our own path. As it curved about the side of hill whose top was strangely flattened, however, we found that the path was blocked with logs and rocks. Setting some of the troops to clear the road, I also took the precaution of placing men on watch. Not that such precaution helped, for nothing moves more quietly than a halfling! And, even as we had almost cleared the path, they emerged from the undergrowth, brandishing slings and short blades.
