Our forces had been maneuvering through especially difficult terrain for nearly a week. At this rate, it was becoming touch and go as to whether troop morale or food or both would be entirely depleted before we made it into more reasonable lands. Then, just as we thought things could not get worse, a heavy storm arose, darkening the sky and turning the air to water. Miserable, we huddled at the base of a hill, seeing what little cover we could. And all would have suffered a terrible night, were it not for the fact that one of the sentries discovered a tunnel, which, upon investigation, was found to lead into a sprawling network of cave. There we decided to take shelter, but, no sooner had we entered, when lightning struck, causing the entrance to collapse. We were trapped! Our only chance was to explore the tunnels, in the hope of finding an exit. And fortunately, after a day’s journey in the dark, a paling of the darkness ahead lifted our spirits high, and soon we were outside once more, breathing deep of the sweet clean air.
