A sense of darkness had been growing in [Character]’s mind as he had journeyed onwards. So that when, ahead, he espied a broken and crumbling tower, jutting out from the mountain’s side like some skeletal finger, he knew that this must surely be its root and cause. Still, curiosity and fascination drew him towards it even so, and, hauling aside the fallen masonry that blocked the entrance, he slipped inside. Within, the sense of evil was an almost palpable thing, crawling upon his skin, greasy in the air. In response to the sound of his footsteps the leather slap of bat wings filled the tower, flittermice disturbed at his approach. On the floor were littered bones, of both orc and human. And in the tower’s centre, somehow undamaged by time’s ruinous march, was an altar, lit by a pale and sickly light emanating from a crystal set above it. Upon the altar there lay the broken skeleton of a man, bleached bones gleaming in the dread light. On his finger a ring of gold, inlaid with emeralds. And on the floor beneath him, a chalice, impossibly still filled with a dark liquid, the man’s life blood.
