Dead were strewn upon the ground, blood staining the earth, whilst overhead carrion circled, the scent of death making them bold enough to cry out in anger at the interruption of their feast as [Character] picked his way through the fallen. Doubtless some great battle had been fought there recently, but whether its victory had been worth the cost to whatever Lord or noblemen had the blood of his men on his hands, only they could say. Somehow, however, [Character] doubted it, and certainly the kin of those slain would not consider it so. Too many to think to bury all the fallen, but still, [Character] walked among them with reverence, paying final respect to those dead, their sacrifice the same no matter their side. As he drew near to the further reaches of the battlefield, however, the sound of ragged breathing caused him to pause, bending to one of the bodies to see with surprise that the man yet lived, though barely. Dressed in the browns and greens of a ranger, there was nothing upon him to indicate what side he had fought upon. But, [Character] considered, in this war where brother was set against brother, kin against kin, did such a thing really matter?
