Realizing that he was near a local settlement, [Character] thought to stop there awhile. Approaching the market square, he saw that a great crowd had gathered, and, pushing his way to the front of the throng, saw a man, dressed in gaudy robes, standing on a make-shift stage, and holding high a dove he had apparently just plucked from the air. A banner set above the stage proclaimed him to be the “Amazing Phanorigil”, there to “Delite and Astound with Wondrous Magics”. Watching him a while, [Character] saw that clearly he was a charlatan, possessed of no real magic. Yet even so, the crowd delighted in his performance, and perhaps, [Character] reflected, such a distraction from the troubles of war was no bad thing. Finally, his act concluded, the Amazing Phanorigil’s assistant moved through the crowd, collecting gold for the performance.
