Spirits made low through the monotony of travel, (character) sat for a while in thought, watching the snails move upon the cool of a rock. Of a sudden, there came a flash of wings, a bird dropping down before him to snatch up one of the snails. When it then alighted some distance from him, he saw that it was a large thrush, nearly coal black, save for its pale yellow breast, which was freckled with dark spots. With a rapid twist of its head, the bird cracked the snail’s shell open on the rock, pulling free the snail within before swallowing it in a single quick motion. Then, looking to (character), it tilted its head to regard him curiously, seemingly unafraid.
