There was no doubt about it: he was lost. The trail had twisted and turned upon itself so many times that [Character] had decided to just follow the sun until he broke free of this maddening terrain. However, the trees had become denser and denser, until now, after only an hour of walking, he could see only the occasional glimmer of light, filtered down through the heavy canopy above, so that it was as if he walked not outside but in some huge hall or cavern. Clearly this was not the way, and he was about to attempt to retrace his footsteps when he heard a creaking noise. It did not sound natural, as wood moved by the breeze, but rather more like to the sound of rusted metal, and so, curious, he decided to investigate. Ahead, the trees gave way to a clearing, and there, in its middle, he saw a crude hut, door crooked and moving in the soft breeze. In front of the hut, a massive kettle hung out over a brazier, into which an elderly woman was throwing ingredients, making some sort of soup. Looking up at his approach, she grinned, waving, beckoning for [Character] to join her.
