It was but late afternoon, yet as grey clouds darkened the sky and turned the air to twilight, and fog carpeted the land, it seemed more like to night. For a time [Character] thought to continue onwards, but the fog grew quickly thicker, the clouds darker, until, scarce able to see more than a few feet before him, he determined to make camp as soon as shelter was found. Suddenly, he became aware that it was growing colder, a wind beginning to blow, the hint of ice and snow in its bite. The fog, flowing past him now in shreds and tatters, offered up occasional glimpse of the ground beneath his feet, the sky above, a sky in which faint stars were appearing, cold and distant. Then from the fog up ahead there coalesced a mound, within which were set great stone boulders that formed and framed a dark entrance. Thinking perhaps to find there a place to spend the night, [Character] approached, bending to look inside. Within, all was black, yet it seemed that for a moment the darkness fell away, so that he could see within a high-vaulted banqueting hall, on whose table plates were filled with gold, and chalices with gems. A tall dark figure stood by the hall’s entrance, richly garbed and kingly of appearance, but like to a shadow, with cold eyes filled with a pale light that seemed to come from some remote distance. “Here!” said the voice, deep and cold, that seemed to come from the ground itself. “I am waiting for you.” And having so spoken, the Wight vanished, and with it also the vision of the hall, to leave [Character] staring once more into the low entrance of the barrow.
