Weary from travel, [Character]’s thoughts were on little beyond the prospect of finding a suitable to place to make camp for the night and taking his rest, when up ahead, he saw in the gathering dusk a figure, kneeling upon the ground. Old he seemed, and hunched of form, though tall, and wrapped in robes that were so dark a blue as to appear almost black in the fading light. As he moved closer, [Character] saw that lying on the ground before the man was the corpse of an animal, a fox, dark eyes wide open and staring, mouth stretched wide in final grimace. “Is it right that it should be this way?” the old man mused, seemingly more to himself than to [Character]. “That all of life should come to this in the end? What hopes, what dreams, what joys and desires did even this lowly creature know, and were thusly stripped from him? All that lives, dies, and even when living, lives only through the deaths of others. The world screams out in anguish and pain, yet we are deaf to its cries.” For the first time he looked up, to meet [Character]’s gaze with a fervent intensity, and of a sudden [Character] knew him as The Blue Wizard. “How could Eru have shaped the world so,” he asked, “that it is so filled with suffering and death?”
