A screech awoke [Character] from his sleep. Rising swiftly, he looked about him in the pre-dawn’s grey light to see a large hawk on the wing, circling above. Twice it wound round in lazy spiral, before, in response to a shrill whistle, it dropped from the air and out of sight. Curious, [Character] made his way in the direction from whence the whistle had come, to see up ahead a darkly-cloaked figure whose features were lost within the deep cowl of his hood, and who sat astride a black horse whose flanks steamed and whose nostrils flared wildly. Upon his outstretched arm sat the hawk, and both turned to fix their gaze upon [Character]. “Are you the hunter or the hunted, I wonder?” the figure asked, and his voice was the voice of doom. “The hawk or the sparrow? Speak of why you have disturbed my hunt, else earn the anger of Khamul.”
