The sun a burning eye in the bowl of the sky, [Character] saw with relief a flash of blue on the land ahead, water, a lake made hazy by sun and distance. As he approached, however, he caught the taste of blood on the air, even as the sound of battle, the ring of steel and the cries of the injured, came to his ears. Moving with what swiftness that caution allowed him, he approached the oasis to see a dozen or more men, dressed and masked in black, closing in about the remnants of a guard whose the crests upon their shields marked them as men of King Koashun, the last of whom fell to their attackers even as he watched. And surely, that was the man they risked themselves to protect, a figure in fine Southron silks, standing now alone and unguarded.
