For several days, [Character] had sensed that he was being followed, watched by unseen eyes. Several times he had thought, on turning swiftly, that he had caught a glimpse of something moving in the thick undergrowth of the tangled forest, or heard a rustle in the trees, yet his called out challenges had gone unanswered. At night, too, it seemed that eyes gleamed in the darkness beyond the fire’s light, watching, waiting, whilst in the morning, waking from fitful sleep he would find tracks upon the ground, or see newly-gouged scratches upon the trees. And so it was almost with a sense of relief, if mingled with fear, when, resting awhile in a small clearing created by the falling of a massive tree now rotting on the ground, he saw shapes emerge from the trees. A wolf, lean and soft-padded, and then another. In the branches above he saw birds, dark crows, watching, whilst in the grass he glimpsed the coiling of snakes, and the black backs of massive beetles and crawling insects. A buzzing came to the air, as of distant wasps, and it seemed that the half-dark of the evening light danced before his eyes, shadows twisting, pulling themselves into semblance of a man, features lost within the cowl of his hooded robes, leaning on a blackened staff. “Tell me, wanderer,” a voice spoke, harsh and grating. “For what reason do you intrude upon the lands of Lhachglin?”
