With rations running low, and game being scarce in the snow and wind-scoured lands, [Character] had spent close on a day in following the spoor of a snow leopard, a dangerous creature to hunt, but a risk his hunger made it worth the taking. As night closed in, however, darkening a sky that was bleak under snow-laden clouds, he was close to abandoning the trail when it
led him to a small cave. Cautiously now, with weapon drawn and torch held high, he ducked inside. Within, the ceiling was high enough to allow him to stand, as the light of the flame reflected from ice-slick walls but revealed only an empty cave, no sign of his quarry, nor even its trail, the frozen cave floor revealing no trace of the leopard’s passing. Still, whilst he cursed whatever ill fortune had caused him to lose the trail, at least the cave seemed to offer some small measure of relief from the biting cold and freezing wind. And, considering it as good a place as any to spend the night, he unslung his pack, braving the elements once more to gather what wood he could find, before starting a fire. Still, even so, the cave remained bitterly cold, and he wondered out loud if ever warmth entered such a forsaken land, where the sun, even when it chanced to shine, did so with no real warmth. “Yet there is beauty here, for those with eyes to see,” a soft voice spoke from the darkness at the back of the cave, and he started in surprise as a woman stepped into view, lithe figure wrapped in a mottled leopard-skin cloak, elf-eyes flashing in the fire’s light, and her pale beauty such that he knew her surely to be no other than Losspindel.
