The day’s journey was nearly ended, the sun nearly set, when the coming of a sharp nip in the air indicated a turning of the weather for the worse. And so it was with some relief that [Character] espied up ahead a small hut, set against the side of a hill. Fearing a soaking from the brewing storm, he approached to knock tentatively on the small but perfectly round door. “Go away,” came the reply. “We don’t want your folk around here.” Looking again to the gathering storm clouds, [Character] tried once more, his knocking the sharper this time. And a moment later, warily the door opened to reveal a figure like to a man, yet scarce four feet in height, portly frame threatening to burst open the shirt and neat waistcoat he wore. “Who is it that knocks on Michel Bandy’s door so rudely and unlooked upon?” the hobbit, for such it was, asked. “What do you want?”
