Travel made treacherous by the terrain, [Character] knew better than to seek to continue onwards at night. As darkness fell, then, he sought shelter among the rocks from the rising wind that howled through the mountain passes and threatened to cast him from the heights. And fortune, it seemed, smiled upon him, as he came upon a narrow opening in the cliff face, beyond which a large cave opened out, walls and ceiling lost to shadow. Even as he lit his torch to investigate, however, there came upon him a sudden sense of menace, a terrible foreboding, as upon the stale air he tasted the foul stench of rotting flesh. Turning to leave, something caught his eye at the back of the cave, and holding high his torch, he braved a further few paces further inwards to see a huge web, thick strands like to rope, flung across the back of the cave to block a tunnel leading onwards. Webbing which, he now saw, also rose to cover the ceiling, reaching too down the walls. Stuck fast in the web at the back of the cave was a woman, scarce visible within the strands that cocooned her, face pale, dark hair matted and caught in the web, whilst from the bag she carried there came a strange, soft glow. Thinking her dead, [Character] turned to leave when, to his astonishment, he heard her moan, and looking back saw her eyes now open, wide with terror. It seemed that she looked not at but past him, however, and a sudden terror dripped down his spine as, spinning round, he saw descending from the ceiling a sight beyond the horror of an evil dream, a loathly huge spider with swollen body a vast bloated bag, swaying and sagging, black and blotched. Shelob.
